Socially Just Climate Policies at a Global Scale – Which Way forward?
Online Discussion Forum
With Farah Mohammadzadeh Valencia (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change), Rueanna Haynes (Climate Analytics Caribbean and Team Lead of Alliance of Small Island States Support) and Gertraud Wollansky (BMK – Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology).
The effects of the climate crisis, as well as those of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine are having global impacts. However, the ability to adapt and mitigate the consequences is unevenly distributed between the Global North and the Global South. The Global South, which is most affected, still does not have a strong voice in international discussions.
While there is a consensus on the need for socially just climate policies globally, it is still unclear how to achieve this. Several internationally discussed topics, such as carbon pricing or the debates around loss and damage, point to important ethical questions and potential trade-offs. Will developing and emerging countries need to choose between industrial development and climate goals? Will the poor have to pay the bill for the reduction of global greenhouse gases? Is it fair that many poor countries, who have contributed little to human-induced climate change, are experiencing severe loss and damage? How will their financing needs be met, given their limited technical and financial capacity to address the impacts of climate change?
We would like to invite you to an online discussion forum. The aim is to draw attention to the effects of the current polycrisis while focusing on the Global South. There is an urgent need to address the consequences in the form of renewed and solidary multilateral cooperation. The discussion will feature our latest “Austrian Development Cooperation 2022” flagship report, which addresses these issues and will also be presented there.
We look forward to your participation!
